There are many websites and blogs that lend themselves naturally to affiliate marketing. Some products are a ready tie-in, such as offering flowers on a site designed to publish eulogies. But sometimes the stretch is too great, because offering flowers on an electronics website just would not make sense. As with all things web – the right focus will help you decide if an affiliate program is right for you.
Affiliate marketing is creating a relationship with a product vendor that earns you a commission on every sale initiated from your website. In the simplest terms: you add a link, widget, or banner to your site that advertises their product. The link contains code that is unique to you, and the product vendor will know that the sale was generated at your site. Commissions vary from a fixed amount per sale, to a percentage of the total sales, or some combination of both.
The idea behind affiliate marketing is that – as you develop trust with your target audience – your recommendation for a particular product is well received by your visitors. This can be good or bad for you. It is essential that the product makes sense on your site, that it is quality at a reasonable price, and that the purchase mechanism on the affiliated site is smooth, secure, and easy. If all of these conditions are true, it will reinforce the trust your visitors have in your recommendations. If any of those conditions fail, your trustworthiness could suffer.
So when you are considering an affiliate marketing relationship, carefully measure the focus of your website or blog, the interests of your target audience, and the reliability of the product vendor. If all three point to a positive outcome, then affiliate marketing could be right for your site.
